Striving To Be Environmentally Friendly And Socially Responsible

TDSL strongly believes that timber, from well managed forests, causes less environmental damage when measured on a true life-cycle analysis, compared to steel, concrete, aluminum, plastic and other alternatives. Timber can be recycled or burned to recover heat energy and it bio- degrades safely.

Purchasing Policy

TDSL only procure timber via the Timbmet Group. Our  goal is that all our timber and wood products will derive from legally and sustainably managed forests. To achieve this goal we are committed to:

•  Progressively increasing the proportion of our timber and wood products that come from credible, independently certified legal and well-managed forest sources

•  Working with suppliers worldwide to increase the proportion of our timber and wood products that come from  independently verified legal forest  sources that are actively progressing towards credible independent certification

•  Eliminating timber and wood products originating from illegally-harvested trees, non-certified high conservation value forest, and forests that are being inappropriately cleared or converted

•  Continually improving our performance according to explicit targets set within our environmental management system

•  Regularly reporting our performance to internal and external interested parties

Underpinning delivery of this policy commitment is implementation of our supply risk assessment system within our environmental management system. This process analyses the forest source of every timber and wood product that we purchase: in addition to knowing the country of origin, we seek evidence of forest of origin, traceability of product from forest to our sites, legal right to harvest and legal compliance, and standard of forest management practices.

We use an external consultancy to advise on the gathering of product evidence, to provide second party checks on the validity and veracity of the evidence we hold and to assist in assessment of risk associated with a purchase. We work with producers to reduce the assessed product-specific risk exposure and/or switch purchasing to producers that already meet our requirements. Several producers have been encouraged, through TDSL's Verified Timber Initiative to strive for credible, independent forest management and chain of custody certification.

Independent Checks on our Policy Performance

Timbmet is a member of the WWF UK Forest and Trade Network (WWF UK FTN). The UK FTN (formerly the WWF 95+ Group) is an innovative partnership between WWF and businesses involved in timber or paper products. As a member company TDSL is required to report annually on performance against our timber purchasing policy commitments. Performance is assessed by WWF and subject, on a random sample basis, to independent audit.

TDSL's Environmentally Responsible, Fire Rated Timber Doorsets
FSC Chain of Custody Certified

TDSL strives to be environmentally and socially responsible-: consequently similarly to customer we are committed to supplying products that include timbers from legal and well-managed forest sources.

TDSL acknowledges that the only way to ensure timber is legal and sustainable is to purchase it from independently certified sources. The certification scheme run by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the most credible global forest certification scheme offering independent verification of sustainable forest management. Tdsl has secured FSC/PEFC and Generic chain of custody certification through BM TRADA.

TDSL is the first UK specialist doorset manufacturer to achieve certification to all of the following chain of custody standards.

FSC Certification ref TT-COC-1851
PEFC Certification ref BMT-COC-0046
BM TRADA "Forest products" Certification ref BMT-COC-0008

Certification of these standards allows TDSL to provide independent guarantees to our customers about legal compliance and forest of origin of the wood in our certified doorsets and other products.

Certification also provides independent assurances about the way the forests that provide wood for our certified products have been managed.

TDSL's timber purchasing policy is to source timber and timber products only from forests that are credibly well managed (often referred to as "sustainable").

TDSL can now offer a range of certified doorset products to meet customer needs and expectations, which range from "guaranteed sustainable" to "guaranteed traceable and legal" products.

•  FSC certified door products: compliance with the FSC standard means that a minimum of 70% of the wood content of these products is FSC-certified.

•  PEFC certified door products: as with FSC, the PEFC standard means that a minimum of 70% of the wood content of these products is PEFC certified.

•  Forest Products certified door products: we are able to offer 100% certified solutions by offering products comprising a variable mix of FSC, PEFC, MTCC, SFI and CSA certified products
